The Uganda we once knew o our parents once knew(1950-1970)


Well most of you must have wondered what kampala looked like in the 50's (pre independence) and 70's (post independence) probably mum and dad couldnt have a camera at hand all the time o photography was still a thing of the future
i managed to come across these photos so you could c for urselves how clean and neat our city was and still 'IS" :-)

A later view of Kampala after Independence. Entebbe Road runs diagonally from the bottom of the picture to its junction with City Road between Motor Mart and Barclays Bank. The large tower (top centre) is the Apollo Hotel(Sheraton Hotel) which dwarfs the Speke Hotel in front of it

Thank you for the wonderful pictures. My wife and I spent a week in Kampala while passing through as backpackers in 1976 (Yes, it was the days of Idi Amin, and things were pretty hard.) We ate dinner every evening at the wonderful Speke Hotel.
